Recover My Files : Knowledge Base

Search Knowledge Base

I could preview search results, but now I cannot - "Preview not available for this file type".

If the preview went away, it is usually because the drive was either disconnected, or fell asleep (i.e. powered down).

To test this theory, click on a file in the top right hand window and then in the bottom preview window, right click and select "View as Hex". If the Hex view is blank, then Recover My Files is no longer able to read the hard drive.

If you have finished a search, the first thing you should do is save the search result listing. To do this, in the text menu at the top of the program, go to "Recover > Save Search". This should save you from having to run a new search, because next time you can "Load Search" (a much faster process) and not have to run a drive recovery again.

Now you should try and wake up your drive. Try:

  1. Open Control Panel, look for power settings and make sure you drive power down settings are set to "never";
  2. Open Windows Explorer and if you see a drive letter for the drive you are searching, right click on it and select the drive properties (by querying the drive it forces it to wake up);
  3. If the above does not work and you still cannot preview your files, then close Recover My Files, re-open it, at the top text menu select "Recover > Load Search" and load the .rsv file that you saved earlier. Then test to see if you can preview the files by clicking on them in the search results window.
  4. If you still cannot preview your files again, you will need to run a new search.
